How to write a CV

A well written and well presented CV is your one opportunity to get you noticed in the eyes of a recruiter.   Ensure that you get noticed by avoiding these top CV mistakes:

1.    Focusing on tasks and not achievements.  It might be tempting to copy your job description to explain what you do in each role, but don’t.  Instead, spend some time thinking about how you contribute to the organisation

2.    Writing huge amounts of text.  If this article was 10 pages of dense text, would you finish reading it?  Probably not.  Put yourself in the mind of the person reading your CV: they will want to access short, bullet pointed information that is easy to understand.

3.    Using jargon and big words.  Unless you are in a technical role, avoid over use of in house terminology which recruiters won’t understand.  Explain your responsibilities in straightforward language – and impress with the details at interview stage.

4.    Confusing chronology and formatting.  Again, don’t make the person reading your CV work hard.  Use white space, chronological ordering, bullet pointed lists and makes dates, job titles and contact information accurate and visible.

5.    Check your spelling and grammar.  Sounds obvious because it is – but I’ve yet to re-write a CV without a spelling or grammatical error!  Check, check and check again.  Have someone else check your work.  It also pays to read your CV out loud – you are more likely to pick up on mistake if you do this.
